From Georgia to Alabama to Tennessee, we will follow the trail of the Civil Rights Movement, retracing the steps and experiencing the settings where some of the most important changes in race and social justice rights in America to take root in the mid 20th Century.  During the 8-day trip we will visit iconic sites like Martin Luther King’s birthplace in Atlanta, the new National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery, and the Birmingham church where MLK built his following; we’ll walk across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, and sit at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Nashville where students staged sit-ins. We’ll also visit local media outlets, and meet with journalists, civil rights educators and those who lived through these turbulent times. Bringing it into the present, this journalism course will tie the hard-fought efforts of former civil rights activists to challenges facing our country today, from voting rights to racial discrimination to unfair education and housing policies to the prison industrial complex. These and other topics will be the basis of our class discussions and subjects students will have the chance to explore, by reporting on newsworthy aspects of America’s 21st Century civil rights movement.
