Khon Kaen, considered the “land of smiles” is an extremely friendly, predominantly Buddhist city in the heart of Thailand’s Northeast region. It is also the largest center for education, healthcare, and technology in the region. Compared to other cities in Asia, Khon Kaen is relatively new, established just over 200 years ago. However, the ancient cultures and traditions from eras long past have contributed to shaping the local people and culture today, offering year-round fairs and festivals celebrating these ancient cultures. Khon Kaen offers a plethora of things to do, including the Khon Kaen National Museum, Day and Night Markets, and Phu Pha Man National Park. The cost of living in Khon Kaen is low, as the area does not have high volumes of tourism. However, the local transportation system makes travel to neighboring countries such as Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam very easy, with larger cities such as Bangkok and Chiang Mai only an hour flight away.

Courses at Khon Kaen will either be 3 credits, or 1 credit if they are a "recreation course" (i.e. Muay Thai, Music, and Dance). Courses range from Health, to Human Development, Thai Culture, Dance, Global Issues, and more. Thai language courses are not required by the university, however they are strongly encouraged in order to help the process of assimilating to your new city and culture.  In order to have an idea of what classes are available, please click here

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to USAC Thailand and Rutgers University. That means you will need to take approximately 12 to 18 credits while abroad. The credit translation system between USAC Thailand and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at Khon Kaen will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript.  It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail.

For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.
