Students will develop an enhanced understanding and appreciation for how sport serves as a vehicle for education in a global society. Students will be introduced to and apply concepts of cultural intelligence and educational leadership via an international experience in Spain and England. This course seeks to broaden students’ perspectives with respect to the global influence of sport and education.

Locations: London (7 nights) & Barcelona (4 nights)
London is one of the worlds great sport & business cities and provides many excellent academic opportunities for students interested in learning more about the Global Sport Industry. The origins of many of the world's most popular sports today lay in the codification of traditional British games. This program will take students inside the European Model of Club Sports where they will receive firsthand experience at various facilities, clubs, universities and other sporting organizations and businesses.

Sport plays a prominent role in lives of people in Barcelona. Popular team sports are association football (soccer), bull fighting, & rugby union. Students will explore the city of Barcelona and experience the rich architecture and sports culture.

The course is designed to complement the classroom learning of students in the Graduate School of Education (GSE) as well as students with a special interest in this content area (educational leadership). This course seeks to broaden students’ perspectives via an international experience paired with classroom instruction. Students can view a sample syllabus here, please note that this syllabus is a draft and subject to change.

Through this course and international experience, students will:
  • Develop an understanding of the international movement of sport and education by observing and participating in another culture’s mainstream sport and recreation outlets.
  • Develop an understanding of international sport marketing, educational psychology, sponsorship, fundraising and grass root program development
  • Understand and appreciate the unique history and culture of Spain/England and the influence of this history and culture on global sport and recreation movements
