Your Host City: Jinan
Jinan,  has been one of China’s great cities for nearly 3000 years, and is the modern, bustling capital of Shandong Province today – 2 hours to Beijing and 4 hours to Shanghai by bullet train.  Shandong itself is an ancient seat of Chinese learning --  Confucius (551-479 BC) was born, educated, and spent most of his life in this area, as did Zou Yan (305-240 BC), often called the “founder of all Chinese scientific thought.”  In Jinan you will find old China and new China woven together, with traditional architecture – some more than 1000 years old – next door to  gleaming skyscrapers.  Known as the "City of Springs," Jinan boasts 72 breath-taking natural springs both in the urban center and the areas surrounding it..   Some interesting places to explore and discover are the park-enclosed Baotu Spring; near the city center, expansive Daming Lake has landscaped islands and parkland with temples and pavilions; and the modern Shandong Museum with its huge collection of provincial artifacts, spanning the Neolithic Longshan culture to the Ming dynasty.

In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the Shandong University website.  We will work with you to get the syllabi for courses that interest you so that you can review the course content with your Rutgers professors and advisors.  Shandong U is known as a comprehensive university with a long tradition of excellence in the humanities and social sciences, and new state-of-the-art facilities for sciences and engineering.  Students with advanced Chinese language ability may be eligible to take courses in any major.  Students who are learning or just beginning to study Chinese are expected to take Chinese language course(s) at Shandong U while doing other coursework in English.
Shandong University comprises 8 campuses (Jinan Central Campus, Hongjialou Campus, Baotuquan Campus, Qianfoshan Campus, Software Park Campus, Xinglongshan Campus, Qingdao Campus and Weihai Campus) in three different cities (Jinan, Qingdao and Weihai), covering an area of over 533 hectares (including 200 hectares of Qingdao campus, the university’s stunning new campus by the sea..)

You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to both Shandong University and Rutgers University.  The credit translation system between Shandong and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at Shandong will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript.  It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail..  It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail - you will not receive the credits.
