A current focus in healthcare and nursing is caring for populations of patients, not just individuals. A global community health experience then serves many purposes: it strengthens the concepts of population and global health, as well as provides service-learning opportunities within a community of individuals with diverse needs. Students will see first-hand the differences in healthcare when compared to our own system. These global experiences help develop the nurse as a professional. Critical thinking is enhanced through actively learning to solve problems. Students will also learn to provide and manage care for underserved populations who have very limited resources in diverse settings - concepts which can be applied to many areas of the United States. Currently, the agenda includes hospital, pediatric, community, and orphanage visits.
