  • Form a Commitment to Action: a new idea with a specific focus that will achieve concrete and measurable outcomes.
  • If accepted, attend the annual CGI U Meeting to network with peers, attend panels and working sessions, and learn from experts on how to turn your Commitment idea into action.
  • Following the CGI U Meeting, compete for seed funding opportunities to help launch your Commitment to Action.

How to Apply to CGI U

In order to participate in CGI U, students must complete the CGI U application process and be accepted by CGI U.  The deadline to apply to CGI U 2016 is December 1, 2015.

Before applying for CGI U, interested students should complete the pre-application process through the Center for Global Education’s website using the "apply now" link above.  In order to participate in pre-departure group meetings and be eligible for seed funding competitions, all participants must complete the above pre-application process.

The Center for Global Education will also offer accepted students the chance to compete for seed funding, small grants of $500-$2000 to help launch their Commitments to Action.  This process will take place following the CGI U meeting, and seed funding grants will be issued toward the end of the spring semester.

Interested students should contact the Center for Global Education to make an appointment with the CGI U Campus Liaison before or shortly after registering their Commitment idea.

The Center for Global Education has no role in the CGI U acceptance process.  Only students who apply and are selected by CGI U are invited to attend the CGI U meeting, and only Commitments that are selected by CGI U will be eligible for funding through the CGI University Network.

2015-16 Timeline

Fall 2015: Interested students meet with campus rep and formulate ideas for Commitment to Action.  Where possible, students should also identify a Rutgers faculty mentor with expertise in their Commitment area. Once students have decided on their area and type of Commitment, they complete the pre-application on the CGE website.  Registration continues until November 30.  Once students have registered their Commitments, they may begin applying directly to CGI U.

Winter 2015-16: After working with CGI U advisor on a draft of their Commitment to Action, students submit their CGI U applications by December 1st.  Accepted students are notified in early January.

Spring 2016: Accepted students meet twice in the spring semester in preparation for the annual CGI U meeting.  Students attend three-day CGI U meeting in March.  Upon return to campus, eligible students will have the chance to compete for seed funding through the Center for Global Education.

Spring/Summer 2016: Students return from the CGI U meeting and begin implementing their Commitments to Action.  All seed funding is dispersed to Commitment-makers by the end of the spring semester.

“I think a lot of people put this sort of stuff on a pedestal.  I’m realizing more and more how tangible this kind of work is … you don’t have drop your whole life and move to Africa to make a difference.”
