Pohang University of Science and Technology
Pohang, South Korea (Outgoing Program)
Pohang is located in eastern Korea in the Gyeongsangbuk-do province. As the home to POSCO, one of the largest steel companies in the word, this city is a major Korean industrial power. Pohang is located on the coast which of course means great beaches and lots of fresh seafood. Buhku Beach, located in the northern region of the city, is a popular destination for beachgoers. Every summer, Pohang holds its International Fireworks Festival on the beach. And for a taste of what the locals are eating try guamegi, a traditional winter dish made with fresh pike- that is frozen and thawed to mimic the old days when the fish was left in the cold to dry.
In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the POSTECH Course web page (click on English, Learning Guide, Courses). POSTECH offers courses in English and Korean. Students with high proficiency in Korean will be able to choose from all offered courses. Students with the necessary prerequisites may be able to take Graduate level courses. When looking for courses, be sure that you are looking at courses for undergraduate students only and that you are looking at classes in the correct term of study. At POSTECH the Fall semester is actually Semester II and the Spring semester is Semester I.
In addition to the regular university courses, POSTECH also offers a Korean language course for visiting students. This class will meet twice a week and will also cover culture related topics. You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to POSTECH and Rutgers University. That means you will need to take at least 12 credits each semester. Most classes at POSTECH are worth 3-4 credits. The credit translation system between POSTECH and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at POSTECH will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript. It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit or pass/fail.
For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.
