CIEE: Ferrara Liberal Arts
Ferrara, Italy (Outgoing Program)
The city of Ferrara, in northern Italy, lies on a branch of the River Po some 30 miles from Bologna. The influence of the Renaissance can be seen in the architecture of the city, its broad streets, moated castle, cathedral, and palaces. A city of fewer than 140,000 people, Ferrara is still enclosed within five miles of medieval walls. During the Renaissance, it was an influential center for painters. Today, Ferrara is known as a city of festivals, the most important being the Palio of St. George, the Buskers Festival, and a festival of hot-air balloons. The city is also known as the Citta della bicicletta – the Town of Bicycles as that’s how the natives get around town. The city is well-connected by rail to Mantua, Padua, Siena, Bologna, Venice, and beyond.
In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the CIEE website.
The Rutgers Italian department has created a list of CIEE:Ferrara courses and their Rutgers equivalencies. For a list of approved courses click here. Should you have any questions, or you do not see your course listed, please contact the Italian department.
All CIEE students enroll in a required, intensive Italian language course at the start of the semester. Following the intensive language course, all students are required to continue their Italian language study at the appropriate level throughout the semester, and select three content courses taught in Italian with Italian texts. All CIEE classes are with CIEE students only and not with Italian students. Content courses include Art History, Italian Cinema and Literature. Students with a very high language level may audit select courses at the University of Ferrara. All CIEE students have access to the libraries, computers, cafeterias, and sports facilities of the University of Ferrara.
A minimum of 15 credits and four courses is required for every student. The credit translation system between CIEE and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at CIEE will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript. You will receive 3-4 credits per class taken with CIEE. It is not possible to take classes not-for-credit or pass/fail.
