CIEE: Valparaiso Liberal Arts
Valparaiso, Chile; Vina del Mar, Chile (Outgoing Program)
Valparaíso and its twin city of Viña del Mar are located between the Andes Mountain and the Pacific coast, just two hours by bus from Santiago. Valparaíso is a port city, housing the Chilean Congress; and Viña del Mar is a modern resort city, with shops, beaches, recreational facilities, and a residential area. With affordable mass transportation between the two cities, students find them both friendly locations in which to live and study.
In order to have an idea of what classes are available, you should visit the CIEE website.
The study abroad program is intended for students who have at least five semesters of college level Spanish, or the equivalent, and are looking for a program that permits direct enrollment with a Chilean university. You will choose one or two courses from the list of required CIEE courses and three-four direct enroll classes at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso (PUCV) , including an advanced Spanish language course. You may also enroll in one CIEE elective. All courses are taught by faculty from PUCV and the language of instruction is Spanish.
You will need to be sure that you are registered as a full time student according to CIEE and Rutgers University. That means you will need to take at least 16-18 credits while abroad. The credit translation system between CIEE and Rutgers University is 1:1, meaning a 3-credit course at CIEE will also be a 3-credit course on your Rutgers University transcript. You will receive 3-4 credits per class taken with CIEE. In some cases classes will only be worth 1-2 credits. It is not possible to take classes as not-for-credit, nor is it possible to take classes as Pass/Fail (unless the course is an internship and you receive prior approval).
For information about Study Abroad credit transfer, registration, and transcripts please visit the Academics section of our website.

Accommodations and Meals
You will be placed in a homestay with a Chilean family and be provided with the 3 meals per day. Most homestays are located in Viña del Mar and a few are in Valparaíso. The sister cities are very close to one another and PUCV has departments in both cities. Please note that for Academic Year students following the July-July program are responsible for the cost of housing and meals during the December-March break.
You are encouraged to bring a wireless enabled laptop. You'll have access to email and the Internet at the CIEE office in Viña del Mar, the university, and at the abundant and inexpensive Internet cafés in Viña del Mar and Valparaíso. Please note that the quality and availability of internet access does not always compare with that you may be used to at home.
